Name:

Melanie Martinez of Sprout's "The Good Night Show" was fired on July 21 because of two short comedy sketches she appeared in over seven years ago. Please let PBS and Sprout know that you disagree with their decision and since Mel was important to our children, you will no longer watch or support their networks.

My Email to Sprout and PBS

Here's the text of the email I sent to Sprout, my local PBS affliate, and PBS Ombudsman, Michael Getler:

Subject: Rehire Mel

Body:

I just wanted elaborate on my previous email about the ridiculous firing of Mel.

1. Given your line of reasoning (Mel used salty language in a tongue-in-cheek comedy sketch), then the venerable Sesame Street should be pulled off the air. I mean, they have a huge roster of guest stars that have produced music, films, and television material not suitable for children. Let's run down some of these guests and their material that is, as you say, inappropriate:

Jason Alexander - On Seinfeld, discussed the size of his penis. Regularly lied, stole, and adulterous
Tyra Banks - Victoria Secret model
Wayne Brady - Used the "N" word on Chappelle's Show
Jim Carrey - Used naughty words and appeared nude in Ace Ventura
Bill Cosby - Numerous sex scandals and outspoken activist
Jamie Lee Curtis - appeared in her underwear in movies
Robert DeNiro - regularly plays murders
James Gandolfini - plays a murder/criminal
Madeline Kahn - played a number of 'saucy' characters, in movies like Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. Much like the bits Mel was in.
Mel Gibson - regularly kills people on screen, and has appeared nude in film.
Tom Green - gross out comic. Built nude statues of his parents and displayed on TV.
Julianne Moore - has appeared nude and in numerous sex scenes.
Bob Saget - was in the Aristocrats
Arnold Schwarzenegger - star of dozens of violent movies
Cindy Crawford - posed nude for Playboy
Johnny Cash - drug addict and adulterer
Lucy Liu - made a career of playing sexually charged characters
Susan Saradon - sex scenes, scantily clad, sexually charged roles
Glenn Close - in Fatal Attraction was nude in several sex scenes. Played a psychotic, murderous adulterer.
The list goes on and on. Fortunately, the fine folks at Sesame Street realize that their audience won't have their childhood ruined because one day, they grow up and watch Fatal Attraction.

2. This teaches an awful lesson to children: Make one mistake and that's it. No forgiveness. Just immediate, irreversible punishment. Good lesson.

3. To the person(s) that decided that firing Mel was the right decision: What have you done in college that warrants you losing your job today?

Mel did these bits when she was in school. They were two 30 second spots. She's an actress. What stupid things have you done? What skeletons are in your closet? Should you lose your job today for them?

This was a terrible business decision, and it was also an awful decision morally. It was a politically motivated action, perpetrated by a coward(s). Instead of standing up to potential a backlash over 60 seconds worth of comedy (it's not like she was in porn), you took the easy, spineless, cowardly way out. You stabbed Mel in the back, after she, and her show, helped build the foundation of your network. Saying that the network felt Mel acting as host for the show would be inappropriate is a lie. The network simply feared a negative reaction.

So, fearing some salty language, you have, inadvertently taught us all a lesson: The people that run Sprout do not value loyalty, forgiveness, honesty, or courage. Every night our family watched the Good Night Show as part of our child's bedtime routine. Until Mel, and her show is restored, we will not be watching. Those responsible for this decision need to show some integrity, class, and responsibility by issuing an immediate apology to Mel, parents, and all the children that tune in every night.

In addition, I'm seriously questioning whether or not we should provide any support for my local PBS affiliate -- if this is a decision that PBS is happy with.

I wasn't the biggest fan of the network anyways BUT Melanie was the only reason that I watched the show. Without her... PBS Sprout might as well fold up and send Kevin over to Noogin. I will also boycott the channel and I'm starting a blog on Myspace (www.myspace.com/glowentertainment) asking others to do the same.

I was also not the biggest fan of Melanie. However, I gained a new respect for her when I realized that she starred in the "Technical Virgin" series of parodies. I am outraged by the actions of PBS. I also wrote a similar letter to PBS and Sprout detailing the actors/actresses they've had on their shows that have previously made "inappropriate" content. I hope Ms. Martinez will sue them into oblivion.

What a shame. Any contract language notwithstanding, Ms. Martinez shouldn't have been fired for such an obscure thing, especially so abruptly! It was a poorly thought out, unjust, and overall a lame decision.

My wife and I are actually a bit relieved to see that Melanie isn't the overbearing perky sugar and spice goodie goodie in real life that her *character* on the Good Night Show projects! It actually builds her credibility in our eyes and we feel better knowing she's an influence and friend for our boy.

However, as much as I and my 2+ year old son would much like to see her back on, that'd be a bit selfish, since this whole overblown event will undoubtably open more promising and career-enhancing doors for Melanie than PBS could have ever done. To boot, the right people will recognize the appealing work ethic she displayed by bringing the matter to the attention of her bosses.

Plus, now there's more Pingu! And less Star!

I am appalled at the decision to let Melanie go. I have emailed PBS, Channel 3 and the Ellen Show. I have never posted on a blog or written regarding anything of this sort before. I feel awful for Melanie and hope she either gets her gig back or gets another BETTER gig. I have sent the following email to PBS and Sandy Wax (PBS President):
Ms. Wax:
I am 35 years old, a mother of a 2 1/2 year old and expecting my 2nd child. I am appalled at your decision to let Melanie go. What poor decision making on behalf of you and your network's executives.

I know there has been message board postings, newspapers articles, etc. already started regarding this decision. I have not yet read 1 posting or article supporting your decision. I have only read disappointing emails and postings of how thousands of children will miss their beloved host and want her back.

I have NEVER posted a message or wrote an email like this - - until now! I have also sent the story to a local news network and hope they can spread the word about the gross misfortune that you have created for this young girl (Melanie) and the disappointment that you have now created for thousands of Mom's and Kids across the Delaware Valley and beyond.

I viewed the so-called video that led you to make your decision. The dialogue in this video is nothing short of what is viewed by millions on any given Saturday night on Saturday Night Live! I find it hard to believe that PBS would turn down an appearance or support by Will Farrell or Mike Myers because of their past "adult satire" they have participated in during their SNL days. Also, Eddie Murphy who has built his career on "adult satire" and has gone on to make millions of dollars for major film companies with Dr. Doolittle, Daddy Day Care and Haunted Mansion (to say the least). You and your colleagues are professionals in the industry and are supposed to know this already! I can't believe you have made the choice to let Melanie go and/or have fell short to veto this decision.

I would have expected PBS to announce the support of their host - - not make a hasty decision based on their inability to handle damage control. What a shame! If PBS understood their audience and aimed to please them (like they state) - - they would announce they made such a hasty decision and realize how much Melanie means to the network and their audience. Unless of course, you couldn't admit you made a mistake (which is likely) based on your hosts past "acting" gigs!

I will no longer watch or support your network. I will look out for Melanie and hope she gets a similar hosting position and follow her to whatever network is strong enough to support her.

Former PBS Viewer,
Janine Weick

Although I agree with your sentiment, I think that boycotting a station like PBS is uncalled for. I don't like that Melanie was fired, but I also think Sprout has a ton of meaningful and education programming for my child. I will write my email to PBS, but I won't boycott them or withhold any donations.

What a bunch of hypocrites! This is the type of stuff exposed by "Nightline" BTW - I trust that you will screen your guests on Sesame Street a lot better. Anyone that isn't a big shot has been in anything you find objectionable - off with their heads!!!

What I really find objectionable is that you would have the guts to fire or exclude someone of more Hollywood clout even if they had even more objectionable roles in their past- like Glenn Close, of "Fatal Attraction" fame. Remember - actors are artists - to fire them for playing roles - isn't that sensorship? You saw an easy target, didn't you. You underestimated!!!

Shame on you!!!!

I also sent an email on behalf of my 2 1/2 year old daughter. It reads:

Dear PBS Sprout,
Please don't fire my friend Melanie. I don't care what she did before I was born, I love her now. Don't your shows teach me that I should forgive my friends? I hope that people forgive me if I make a mistake.

Please bring back my friend Melanie. Bedtime is no fun without her.

Well, it looks better with the kidprint font and the sad picture of her I included. :P

I sent this as an actual paper LETTER. It might not be a bad idea to do this, as I've heard that letters mailed to them count as much more than a simple email. Although lots of emails would probably be ok too.

Whether or not PBS "agrees" with Melanie's firing, I'm not sure that they have much to say about it. They only own about 15% of Sprout; the single largest owner of the channel is Comcast (at 40%), followed by HIT Entertainment (at 30%). HIT is the private media company behind such productions as Bob the Builder, the Wiggles, and the like.

Perhaps the most appropriate concern to direct at PBS would be whether or not it is wise to allow their brand to be associated with an entity that they have so little direct control over.

Dear Hypocrites

Free speech is under fire from all sides in our
society and it Is clearly eroding the liberties we
hold dear. Therefore I was shocked and saddened to see you
kowtowing to the growing forces of illiberalism In
this country. It Is reprehensible of you to fire
someone for spoofing the sexual views of certain
segments of our culture. Especially Given that the
movies in question were produced SEVEN years ago.
Melanie Martinez Is not producing these movies now
WHILE also producing 'The Good Night Show'. Even if she was do you really think her 2-5 year old audience would understand, let alone care? No this was nothing more than a knee jerk reaction, a kowtowing to the alter of Political Correctness.

You are falling into the same moral hypocrisy that
the Religious right suffers from. Don't hold our lives up to the light for all to see and learn from.
No, we should Hide who we are, away In the dark. As so many believe now, as long as we pretend to be moral, we are. Pretending, after all, is always better than real
life. Just ask George, Dick and Donald.

You are punishing Free expression and I am ashamed of
you.

My children are so upset that Melanie is no longer a part of thier nightime routine.
We decided to write to her; we drew pictures and cards and sent them to her and to the new puppet character "Star." The artwork is from the chidren and we wrote "please come back Melanie, we miss you!" I don't know if it'll help or not but at least I am teaching my children to be proactive in these situations. Sprout seems to encourage our children to write to them (ie. send artwork, or birthday cards) maybe they'll finally get some- my children and I are ouraged!!! please join us and send "Star" some letters asking for his best friend and ours back! Great Email! I just do not understand the PBS firing? As you and others have said, PBS has George Carlin as Thomas the Tank Engine. I have zero problem with Carlin on Thomas the Tank Engine. If PBS hired NOBODY who ever did anything "naughty" I would understand. But when Tom Green who is filthy (funny, but filthy) is on Sesame Street,...I,...I am confused. BRING BACK MELANIE!

A copy of my letter to Huggies:

"My 2 1/2 year old daughter enjoys your ad on PBS Sprout. She yells "STRETCH" right along with that little baby weightlifter every time. So it is with a heavy heart that I must tell you I will never see that ad again, nor purchase your product, for my current (un-potty-trained, unfortunately) daughter, or my son, to be born in September. Until PBS Sprout sees fit to reinstate the hostess of the Good Night Show after her unjust termination, I cannot support them, nor anyone who spends their advertising dollars with them. If you do a quick search, you may be suprised to see how much support she really has, and how many viewers PBS Sprout is losing every day. I urge you to reconsider where you spend your advertising dollars. They will not reach me.

Thank you for your time."

I'm disappointed with PBS' reaction also. Let's see...when I was 27 I was drinking, having premarital sex (often) and numerous other things that only me and my God know about. Granted none of it is on video, but none of those things represent me no in my personal and professional life. PBS' knee-jerk reaction to fire Melanie because they feared a moral uprising has actually backfired. Isn't that funny? I hope Melanie is brought back, if not, I hope she will do better than PBS.

This guy's just out-there, but it's a good article:

A few notes about the article you recently posted from the NY Daily News about the president of PBS. Very disturbing stuff. Ruined my coffee this morning. But thank you.

I immediately wrote to the Ombudsman or whatever, because I felt that this showed an incredible hypocrisy, coming straight from the very top, and should be brought to his attention as a failure of PBS to maintain its own values and integrity.

Thank you so much for all you've done here.

Wow I am stunned...you all need to face the facts! Those spoofs are gold in the hands of a pedophile. Those creeps often lure and groom innocent children with pornographic material...Melanie's face telling them that it's just peachy to take it in the ass is, just no good. 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 10 boys will be sexually molested in their lifetime...it's the horrific truth in our country...wake up people!!

That means of the 30 people who've commented on here, 3 of your sons and 7 of your daughters will be victimized. The last thing we need is to teach our children to trust Melanie only to have someone show them those tapes. If firing Melanie saves even one child from being abused it was well worth it.

Not to mention I'm an advocate of teaching abstinence to youth. The instructional nature of the videos is the real clicher for me...they teach an opposing view. I won't let my children develop an emotional connection to someone who tells children that abstinence is a joke-sorry Charlie.

I will still watch SPROUT and honestly as nice as Melanie was, we'll be fine with a better suited host.

I wish Mel the best of luck and maybe she can get a gig with on the Chelsea Handler show?

As for the voice over's that Carlin and Baldwin do THOSE ARE VOICE OVERS-- NOT HOSTS --BIG DIFFERENCE!

As for the celeb visits on Sesame Street again BIG DIFFERENCE-they are not regular HOSTS!

10:32 AM
Anonymous The Police said...

What is your point, here?
Because odly enough, you sound like a pedophile on the prowl who just got his hands on the "gold."
Are you really a believer that the abstinence only teaching is the way to go?
I have seen the parodies that Melanie was in and they were harmless adult based skits. No one will be showing my children them, thank you very much.
Now how many children are you going to pretend to teach your abstinence only plan to, gain their trust, and then molest them tonight? Creep!
If it is true that a current cast member of Sesame Street, not a guest, has been on one of the most violent sexually based shows there is. And holier than thou, Maria regularly appears in the Vagina Monologues. Then Melanie can be in an SNL-like skit.

Now step away from the computer with your hands up!

3:41 PM
Anonymous Michelle said...

Wow. Anonymous, if that IS your real name, you believe that a pediphile will show a tape of melanie with a pink vibrator, use it to lure a kid into his car, and then do something horrible to him or her? THAT is your concern?

Seems a bit far fetched to me.

And hosting is NOT different than guest appearing. The kids still see a familiar face. Your same pediphile could lure a kid into a van with a lurid love scene featuring good ol' Gina from Sesame Street, who also appeared on the Sopranos in a recurring role.

Makes as little sense as your post did.

"Those creeps often lure and groom innocent children with pornographic material...Melanie's face telling them that it's just peachy to take it in the ass is, just no good. 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 10 boys will be sexually molested in their lifetime...it's the horrific truth in our country...wake up people!!"

I'm wide awake. I just think that Melanie is the least of our worries. What percentage of those statistics occur BY A FAMILY MEMBER OR CLOSE FRIEND?? A very high percentage. And Melanie's little skit will have NO affect on those poor kids.

BTW, if you are interested, seems that good ol' Brian Henson and his Muppets are now doing "adult" type shows. You can read all about it here. Then, you can thank the nice folks at PBS for giving them all kinds of pedophile bait with the good ol' muppets.

What a world. What a world of hypocrites

PBS needs to get their act together.
There are a few blogs out there that reference the termination of Melanie Martinez from PBS Sprout. My son, like so many other children are addicted to the "Thomas the Train", "Kipper", "Dragon Tales", and other programs on both the station and the "Goodnight Show" in which Melanie had been hostess.

Unfortunately PBS has been VERY short sighted in removing Melanie from the program. Melanie seemed to be such a ray of sunshine on the show that made our kids happy. In PBS's infinite wisdom, they have terminated Melanie due to a 30 second comedy skit meant for the internet or adult comedy. This is unacceptable! This 30 second skit was meant for a different audience! PBS has had many comedians and actors that have played in "adult" situations for movies and cable television [Robin Williams for example, and love him by the way]. Melanie was THE best host for the show, PERIOD!

The replacement PBS airs now scares my child, and he reminds me of a pedophile!!!!
