Name:

Melanie Martinez of Sprout's "The Good Night Show" was fired on July 21 because of two short comedy sketches she appeared in over seven years ago. Please let PBS and Sprout know that you disagree with their decision and since Mel was important to our children, you will no longer watch or support their networks.

got my first response back from the 'borgs at sprout:

"We understand that you are disappointed with the recent changes to The Good Night Show, and we too are saddened that we had to make this difficult decision. Our foremost priority is to do what is best for our young viewers and those who love them, and we will continue to provide the quality programming you and your children have come to expect from
PBS KIDS Sprout.

Thank you."

I didn't expect much, but this is even lower than my expectations.

I got the exact same message as Aaron F. and I agree: completely unsatisfactory and underwhelming.

Got a point and a question.

First, I want to say this to Mel: to hell with Sprout. With the videos you've shown another side of you that's not all unicorns and fairy tales. Although that sentiment (along with many similar ones expressed here) does not pay the bills or buy groceries, I hope you find a more open-minded employer who will see you more as an actress open to diverse roles, and I wish you luck in the future.

Second, I noticed that some of the episodes of Pingu on Comcast OnDemand have commercial advertising. Now early on, they had Huggies, and since that had something to do with the demographic I didn't mind it too much. However I saw an ad for a 10-CD set for 80's pop music. Generally I wouldn't mind that either, but I thought this was supposed to be a PBS channel. I thought this was supposed to be a relatively commercial-free zone. What's the point of PBS if they're going to be no different than the Big 3 OTA networks? I thought I heard CPB wanted to decrease PBS funding; perhaps they thought they could cover the gap with commercials? Wouldn't that make PBS more susceptible to the whims of their commercial sponsors???

Actually, after reading a bunch of different articles since the Melanie thing happened, it appears that Sprout is only like 15% PBS; the rest of it is Comcast. From what I understand, PBS faces such steep competition from other kids' channels (Nick Jr., Noggin, Etc.) that they decided to form Sprout with Comcast in order to keep some of their shows from being bought. Well, IMO they made a deal with the devil and now look at how many parents (and even people who aren't parents!) are angry. And that anger isn't being directed at Comcast (who, in all reality is probably more likely to be at fault). I would love to know what's going on behind the scenes over there.

I actually wrote the PR person at PBS Kids Sprout and cc'ed a Customer Service Director at Comcast, who is the largest shareholder of PBS Sprout Kids.

Well, it's 7:15 pm and we are watching DVDs. PBS Kids Sprout can drop dead!

the comcast response was more of a joke than the sprout response:

"Thank you for contacting us regarding your Comcast cable service.

I understand you have a question regarding the PBS channel and its programming. We understand how frustrating it can be to want certain programs, such as sporting events, and to not be able to see them. At the same time, we realize that there is certain programming available that you would rather not see. The relationship between the networks (channels) and Comcast is such that the networks broadcast their signal and Comcast picks it up and distributes it to our customers. In this way, we are able to offer many channels, packages, and sporting events to choose from.

The type of programming available on each channel is at the discretion of the network that broadcasts the signal. As a result, there will be games and events that are blacked out on local stations due to contracts and agreements with no advanced notice. For the shows that you would like to limit viewing for certain family members, Comcast offers a parental control feature on some analog converter boxes and on most digital boxes. Information about the parental control feature can be found on www.Comcast.com under the FAQ section.

For general concerns about programming that is provided by the networks, please contact the network or programming service directly. If you need further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us back.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any more questions.

Thank you for choosing Comcast.

Sincerely,

George
Comcast Customer Care Specialist"
